The implementation of the Best Start Gifted and Talented Kindergarten Resource Package will involve:

Implementation of the toolkit

The toolkit contains identification tools for use with teachers, parents and students because it is advisable to use multiple sources of information to identify gifted students. Feedback will be sought from teachers via survey and focus groups on the identification tools in the package .

Teachers are expected to trial at least two of the teacher tasks and forward two annotated and analysed work samples to the NSW Curriculum and Learning Innovation Centre by Wednesday 16 November.

Guidelines for implementing the teacher tasks are on p. 16 of the Identification toolkit. Teachers may implement the tasks with an individual student or a group but need to consider how they can document the work of several students. Please note that documentation of the work samples needs to be detailed and clear. The Student Information Sheet in the resource package (orange envelope) should be carefully completed to ensure that the evaluation of the toolkit is based on sound information.

The Booklet Creating a Learning Story in the Identification Analysis and Interpretation Guide will help teachers to record observations using the Snapshot of Learning at School, analyse and interpret the data and develop teaching and learning plans.

A key element of the toolkit is to find out where students are in their literacy and numeracy learning. It is important to document the student’s level of literacy and numeracy achievement prior to trialling the toolkit and as a result of using it. Ongoing monitoring of the student’s literacy and numeracy achievement should occur. This information should be documented using the attached Literacy Student Analysis Sheet and Numeracy Student Analysis Sheet. The literacy and numeracy tracking sheets are to be included with the documentation to be submitted by teachers to NSW Curriculum and Learning Innovation Centre on 16 November.

You may supplement this information with examples of Early Learning Plans (see Best Start website), SENA 1 and 2 tracking sheets, running records or other assessment data that provides evidence of learning and achievement in literacy and numeracy.
This information should be submitted with the annotated work samples to state office on 16 November.

The attached permission note can be used if filming and/or photographing students to document responses to a toolkit task.
